Info in her email -

I've been collecting Wiltshire, Somerset & Gloucester Silk names (19th century & earlier) looking for connections.

This is your line:
female [Harriet?] bapt 30 Jan 1697/98 St. George church in Whatley to John & Yedeth Silke
female [Edith?] bapt 1699 St. George church in Whatley to ? & ? Silk.
Henry, son of John Silk bur 11 ( ) 1700 St. George church Whatley; Elizabeth King made oath [as to] buried in woollen. [King could be Edith's surname] [This was, by law, an attempt to boost the wool industry in England.]
James Silk chr 5 Mar 1702 St. George, Whatley, Somerset to John & Edith Silk.
I suspect some writing was subject to interpretation regarding the mother's name - Edith or Judith. Daughter's name suggests her mother was Edith.

Unfortunately I cannot tie John Silk born cir 1671 to any particular family. Nearest I have is:

Is it Alford, Holford, Stolford, Saltford St. Mary, Mudford St. Mary?
Is it Coleford? (also written Colford) which is a stones throw from Whatley by this map www.achurchnearyou.com/whatley-st-george/
No St. Mary's found in Coleford, though. Presuming if it was there, it was destroyed & forgotten.

Cloford (St Mary)

CLOFORD (St. Mary), a parish, in the union and hundred of Frome, E. division of Somerset, 4½ miles (S. W.) from Frome; containing 253 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, valued in the king's books at £7. 17. 6.; patron and impropriator, T. Horner, Esq. The great tithes have been commuted for £40, and the vicarial for £135; the glebe comprises 6 acres. There is a place of worship for Wesleyans.

In Cloford there is a Norman church, dedicated to St Mary, dates from the 15th century and was rebuilt in 1856. It is Grade II* listed.
In Wanstrow itself there is another 15th century church also dedicated to St Mary.

Interesting that Frederick Silk 1828 Marston was a Gardener in 1851 & 1861 (from family I thought ties to poster Barry Silk )
Eli Silk 1800 in 1861 was a Gardener in Nunney (an off-shoot of your line) Eli's father Jonathan 1762 was br. of your Samuel 1758.

Neither of those locations are close to Whatley like Cloford.

John of Cloford was son of Edmund. I have no Edmunds nor Edwards born around 1630. Which means nothing. I just hadn't come across it. Consider he could be from Wiltshire or Dorset, as Frome seems to be near both borders. There was an Edward b about 1624 in Calne, Wilts (my territory) but he died in infancy.

Find out what diocese your church belonged in and do a search at www.archive.org for the diocese (BMD records).

Presuming your line is Edmund b. cir 1630 & mar. cir 1655...
