"1641 Protestation Return for Somersham, Huntingdonshire Before the Civil war, a bill was passed through the House of Commons requiring all Englishmen to sign a protestation, an oath by which they undertook to defend the kingdom, the crown and "the true reformed protestant religion". Any who refused would be held to be recusants (Catholics) and as such would be considered unfit to hold office." Richard Silk Tho. Silk Henry Silke www.somersham.info/items/show/50
