Hello everyone. Glad to have been invited here via facebook! So, to start, I just wanted to say hello to all the other Silks out there, and let you know we definitely have THE best last name in the world!
My name is William Brent Silk, am from Vancouver Canada, and am currently living in South Korea. I've resided here for approximately 5 years, on and off. I'm not the first 'William Silk' to live in Korea, actually. My grandfather, also by the name of William Silk, served in Korea for a while during the Korean war. From what I heard, he had a very hard time in Korea, and I think his experience of this country was pretty miserable. I obviously had a much nicer time here, working and living in Seoul, which is now a world-class city. Koreans, especially older ones, are always very impressed when I tell them that my grandfather served in the Korean war. They even thank me for his sacrifice. I never was lucky enough to meet my grandfather. He passed away just before I was born. This is why my parents named me "William."
Anyways, my grandfather was wounded by artillery shrapnel in his leg, and was airlifted to a hospital in Japan where he spent a long time there. The story my Dad told me is that he met a nurse and had a child with her. He eventually came back to Canada, the nurse and child remained in Japan. Let's not judge him or try to understand why that happened. Nobody knows.
My family has always been wondering what ever happened to that child of the nurse. He is half Japanese, and is likely still living somewhere in Japan, all grown up and a little younger than my father (probably born around 1964ish). I've always wondered about him. He would be my half uncle. I'd love to get in contact, and meet him. It's a shame, as I am actually going to Tokyo in mid-January. I'll pass by people, wondering... could he be my relative?
Well, I hope someday I can find that long lost half-Japanese uncle. That would be so very cool...
Cheers! (Gombei, in Korean)
